What is bohemianism, and why are we drawn to it? Is it the carefree spirit, the nonconformity, the effortless cool? Or is it something deeper, an innate yearning for creativity and self-expression? In this post, I'll explore the allure of bohemianism and what it means to be a bohemian person. 

The word "bohemian" first appeared in the 19th century to describe the Romany people of central Europe, who were known for their disregard for conventional standards of behaviour. The word later became associated with artistic and literary circles in Europe, and was embraced by the counter-cultural scene in San Francisco in the 1960s.

Bohemianism is a lifestyle that celebrates creativity and freedom. People who choose this lifestyle often do so to pursue unconventional pursuits rather than the traditional 9-to-5 grind. Today, many people still embrace the principles of bohemianism, using it as a way to express themselves without the restraints of conventional society.

Bohemianism is appealing because it is a rejection of the status quo, allowing people to live life according to their own rules and not conform to societal expectations.

This non-conformity is one of the most attractive aspects of bohemianism. It's an attractive lifestyle choice for those who want to break free from conformity, It's a way to march to the beat of one's own drum and have a good time.

We are drawn to bohemianism because it offers an escape from the monotony of everyday life and a chance to explore our creative side. At its core, bohemianism is about letting go of our inhibitions and embracing our true selves, and that is something we can all benefit from.

The "great resignation" is a new form of bohemianism, as people are rejecting traditional work structures in favour of a more flexible and nomadic lifestyle. By working from home or anywhere, people are realising that this type of lifestyle is possible and liberating.

Being a 40-something woman, I can relate. For a while when I was younger, I embraced my free spirit and chose to focus my energy on creative endeavours and only take jobs I truly enjoyed. I adopted a more bohemian attitude, and at one point considered living on a boat or in a van. However, that plan quickly faded away as I realised that it would be difficult to support myself and my family long-term through my chosen endeavours alone. So, instead of chasing the nomadic lifestyle, I decided to look for more stable income sources.

To me, freedom is being able to pursue my own creative endeavours and work in an environment that I am passionate about.

Everyone's definition of freedom is different, and it is important to strive to maintain our own sense of freedom despite pressures to conform. Being free is what brings us happiness, and that is what we all ultimately want.
